Activities in the Tiniroto area
Rere Rockslide (see picture above)
An impressive 60 metre long natural water rockslide just 50 km NW of Gisborne. These smooth rocks were formed from constant running water from the Wharekopae River and the slide is a lot of fun but can be a wild ride. Use boogie boards, old air mattresses or inner tubes to slide on, to protect your extremities these we usually have hanging up in the Cottage carport for you to use.
Doneraille Park
2 minutes’ drive away. The park is a popular picnic, camping and swimming spot on our Hangaroa river. There are shallow rapids for children to play in and a deeper swimming hole. There are two kayaks available for use – please come and see us and we can take them down to the river for you and supply children with lifejackets. Gorgeous large old trees provide lots of shade. Fishing and eeling on the Hangaroa River are popular pastimes.

Secret Waterfall
10 minutes' drive up Ruakaka Road is an incredible waterfall and cool swimming hole that locals love to travel to. Once you arrive and take in the scene, you will understand why.
In summer you can slide off the waterfall, leap from the rocks and jump in behind the falls themselves but be cautious if there has been recent rain, the flow may be too great or the river may be dirty. The entrance to this secret spot is not signposted - so ask us for directions! |
Ruakituri Valley (Currently No Access - Te Reinga Bridge Destroyed in Cyclone Gabrielle).
20 minutes' back on the main Tiniroto Road towards Wairoa is the spectacular Te Reinga Falls. Turn off right at the Te Reinga village towards the Ruakituri Valley and the falls are on your left after the bridge. There are signs everywhere, so you won't get lost.
The Ruakituri River which is further up the valley is legendary for its trout fishing experiences. We can help you find a local fishing guide. |
Hackfalls Arboretum
20 minutes' drive further up the Ruakaka Road is this incredible Arboretum, home to over 3000 species and varieties of oaks, alders, cherries, magnolias, maples and more. The collection of evergreen and semi-evergreen Mexican oak species is considered the largest private collection of oaks in the world. Hackfalls boasts a variety of spectacular walking tracks, lakes and gardens to visit. There is a small fee to visit this Tiniroto gem.
