Free activities around Mahaanui

Free activities

  • You are welcome to bring your mountain bikes and ride out on the farm tracks. You can also bike the beautiful Ruakaka Road loop which is mostly gravel for a total of 30 km for a good work out.
  • Enjoy the gorgeous sunsets from your private deck or River Cabin hot tub.
  • There are two marked walking tracks for guests to enjoy during your stay – one along the Hangaroa river & one that ventures off through the paddocks and out towards the back of the farm. If we are around we can drive you to our back boundary and you can walk home which is mostly downhill. Maps provided. A reasonable level of fitness and sensible shoes are required (not jandals) as the ground is mostly uneven. Take your time and enjoy the scenery.
  • There are two kayaks available for your use - please come see us and we can take them down to the river for you and supply you with lifejackets. Or you can load up our yellow and purple buggy with the kayaks and head down yourselves.
  • Explore Doneraille Park with its lovely old established trees, swimming hole and shallow river rapids perfect for small children. Find the small ravine which leads you to the hidden waterfall.
  • Listen to our native birdsong from tui's and kereru's that live in the gardens, trees and bush.
  • As part of your experience here at Mahaanui we encourage our guests to meet, greet and feed our friendly pet animals. We'll introduce you to our pet lambs, Charja the kunikuni pig, Bunta the sheep, pony called Punga, Arthur the horse, pigs, alpacas, our one lama Star, Tony the steer, Lizzie our donkey, Fig our house dog, Ziggy the cat, our team of wonderful working dogs (we often have puppies and piglets) and show you how to correctly handle livestock.
  • Bring your horses and explore the farm. There are horse paddocks and stables near the main house for your use.
  • Be amazed at our incredible night skies, unpolluted by city lights.
  • Help yourselves to tennis racquets and balls and have a game on the grass tennis court at the main house.
  • Pick produce from the fruit trees, our vegetable or herb gardens to supplement your meals.
  • Feel free to wander our garden and approach us if you need any advice or help with anything.
  • Short walks across farmland in every direction. Please just leave gates as you find them.
  • If interested we are happy for you to join us in some of our farming activities. This might include getting a feel for our country way of life by spending time with us, doing whatever we are doing. There's always plenty to do if you are after a more active holiday.
  • Hike up to the picnic table to enjoy fantastic 180 degree views of Mount Whakapunaki and the view towards Lake Waikaremoana.
