About the Tiniroto area
The Hangaroa River which boundaries Mahaanui on one side originates in the Huiarau ranges and meets the Ruakituri river at the Te Reinga Falls before flowing out to sea at Wairoa. They are popular trout fishing rivers as there are lots of rocks which attract the trout. The Ruakituri is world reknowned for excellent fishing.
Our mountain Whakapunaki, (home to spiritual ancestor Hinekorako) is 962 metres tall and is the main Tiniroto landmark which is seen from viewpoints all over the farm. If you can’t see it then bad weather is usually heading our way from the south or there is winter fog about. Snow falls on the top a couple of times a year. According to Maori tradition Whakapunake was the last refuge of the moa in NZ.
Tiniroto means “many lakes”. There are 6 well known lakes and many more smaller ones in the district. Three have trout released into them for recreational fishing. The most well known in the centre of Tiniroto where the tavern is called Rotokaha.
The original Tiniroto Tavern was built in 1884 and burnt down in 1898. A second hotel was built and provided accommodation for coaches travelling between Wairenga- O- Kuri and Marumaru but that also burnt down in 1923. The current tavern was built on the same site in 1925 and has had various different owners and refurbishments over the years but now owned by the Cameron brothers from a well known local family. “A must visit”.
